US Energy Department refers to LNG as ‘molecules of freedom’

The land of the free is also the home of brave marketing slogans, proven today with its rebranding of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as “freedom gas”.

The phrase came from an announcement from the US Department of Energy authorising additional LNG Exports from Freeport LNG.

The Freeport LNG name was clearly too much temptation for wordplay for US Under Secretary of Energy Mark W Menezes, who said, “Increasing export capacity from the Freeport LNG project is critical to spreading freedom gas throughout the world by giving America’s allies a diverse and affordable source of clean energy”.

Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy Steven Winberg said, “I am pleased that the Department of Energy is doing what it can to promote an efficient regulatory system that allows for molecules of US freedom to be exported to the world”.

The comments very quickly picked up pace on Twitter.
