Canberra’s Anzac Day heating rule

Canberra Anzac

Perhaps unknown to those living outside the ACT, there’s a longstanding tradition that dates back to the early 20th century where residents don’t use heaters in their homes until at least April 25.

The tradition has apparently been passed on from generation to generation and is forced on new residents through societal pressure.

It appears to be more than just folklore as well, with gas use increasing between 25 to 35 per cent in Canberra in the week following Anzac Day for the past three years.

The trend may have been a little easier to follow in recent years as well, with April’s minimum and maximum temperatures trending upwards.
