Easternwell has signed a drilling services agreement with CO2CRC to support research into carbon capture and storage technology.

Easternwell’s Advantage Drilling Rig commenced work last week to decommission an existing well before drilling a new 1600m-deep well for carbon dioxide injections at CO2CRC’s Otway Research Facility, located in South West Victoria.

“We are excited to be a part of this innovative project by drilling an appraisal well to assist in the ongoing research of carbon capture and storage as a reliable and cost-effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” executive general manager Tim Phelan said.

“CO2CRC’s Otway Research Facility is Australia’s first end-to-end demonstration of carbon capture and storage and we look forward to assisting with their project.”

CO2CRC has invested more than $100 million into the site over the past decade.

The Minerals Council of Australia has recently released an independent report, which has revealed a comprehensive plan for carbon capture and storage (CCS) deployment in Australia.

The Turnbull Government has also discussed carbon capture and storage as an option to fix Australia’s current energy crisis.
